Ethiopia Alemu Getaneh

Alemu Getaneh from Ethiopia has been involved in coffee all his life. He used to sell fresh or dried cherries to mill owners, but in 2018, he began processing them himself.

Getaneh's coffee trees grow on a farm in West Arsi, a region that has gained fame in international quality competitions, including the 2020 Ethiopian Cup of Excellence. While West Arsi has only recently gained recognition, locals like Alemu Getaneh have been growing coffee there for as long as they can remember. It's just that coffee from this region was previously sold under the names Sidamo or Harrar.

Alemu harvests and processes the ripe red cherries by hand. He then ferments them in airtight containers for 72 hours. After fermentation, Alemu dries the coffee on raised beds, raking it every hour to ensure even drying. He also covers cherry during the hottest part of the day and at night, to prevent condensation. Once dried, Alemu packs the coffee into bags and stores them on the farm for about two and a half months. Only after this period does he clean the coffee of its skin and prepare it for export.
